Since its inception in 1935, The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University has grown into a valued resource for both research and recreation. Within its 100 acres, there are wildland preservation areas, rock and water gardens, a children’s garden, a Japanese garden, herbs, flowers, vegetables, and much more.
It also has approximately 10,000 square feet of lawn. Recently, Lou Anella, Ph.D., Professor of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, was in search of a new irrigation system for students in his irrigation class to install at the Botanic Garden.
Anella, who also serves as the Garden’s director, needed a system that could keep the lawn’s pristine appearance without wasting excessive amounts of water. He also wanted to showcase the most advanced technology in lawn irrigation.
That’s when he discovered the IrriGreen Genius Irrigation System.

The IrriGreen Difference
For irrigation purposes, the Botanic Garden’s lawn is divided into five zones. With a traditional irrigation system, six to nine mechanical heads would be needed around the outside of each zone to distribute water.
IrriGreen uses one Genius smart head per zone for a total of five heads to cover the entire lawn.
Not only does that mean that installation took considerablely less time, with less pipe and fewer materials needed, but it results in less water being used.

How does IrriGreen keep grass as green as a traditional system while saving so much water?
IrriGreen uses patented software technology, integrated into its programmable Genius Sprinkler Heads, to digitally control water pressure, the direction and distance of the water sprays, and the rotational speed of the heads. Boundaries are set using IrriGreen’s mobile app, and the sprinkler heads are able to follow the edges of their zone. IrriGreen “prints” water with the precision of an inkjet printer spraying ink on a page – just as Lou Anella demonstrated on Oklahoma Gardening.
The system modifies the sprays up to 437 times per rotation so the watering patterns conform to the exact shape of the lawn. The end result is a beautiful lawn without the water waste.

Landscape irrigation accounts for nearly nine billion gallons of water per day in the U.S. Almost half of this water is wasted due to sprinkler inefficiencies, according the EPA.
Water prices are rising as local reservoirs and aquifers are drying up. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
